Electoral Reform Society of South Australia

Annual General Meeting – Friday, 18 November 2005

The Electoral Reform Society of South Australia (ERSSA) will hold its Annual General Meeting on Friday, 18 November 2005, commencing at 7.45 pm.

The meeting will take place in the meeting room at the rear of George and Jean Jukes’ home, 9 Rosemont Street, Norwood. All members and interested visitors are warmly invited to attend.

Key Discussion: The Future of Constitutional Reform

The major focus of this year’s AGM will be “Where to from here?” – assessing the outcomes and next steps following the South Australian Constitutional Convention.

It is hoped that several delegates from the 2003 Convention will be present to share their insights and reflections on how to ensure that the ideas and recommendations from that landmark event are not lost.

With the State Election scheduled for 18 March 2006, this discussion comes at a critical time. The Society believes that both the Government and Opposition must be reminded of their continuing obligations to the people of South Australia – to respond to the Convention’s findings and to keep democratic reform on the political agenda.

Federal Issues Also on the Agenda

In addition to the State focus, the AGM will include discussion of recent proposals at the Federal level, particularly those arising from the Report of the Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters following its Inquiry into the Conduct of the 2004 Federal Election.

This report raises several significant questions about the conduct, transparency, and accessibility of Australian elections. Members are encouraged to read the accompanying editorial from The Independent Weekly, which explores these national reform proposals in detail.

Open Invitation

The Electoral Reform Society of South Australia welcomes both members and visitors to attend the meeting. This is an excellent opportunity to engage with current debates on electoral and constitutional reform and to contribute to the Society’s ongoing advocacy for a fairer, more representative democracy in South Australia.
