For over 75 years, the Electoral Reform Society of South Australia has been dedicated to ensuring fairer, more representative elections for all South Australians. Our mission is simple but critical: to guarantee that every vote counts, and every voter can trust that their vote reflects their true preferences.
Why Reform is Essential
While Australia boasts many positive features in its electoral system, such as:
Universal adult suffrage (everyone has the right to vote)
Secret ballots to ensure voter privacy
Accurate electoral rolls to prevent fraud
Postal and absentee voting to make participation easier
Clear and transparent vote counting processes
There are significant flaws in the current system that leave many voters unrepresented. In fact, under our existing system, too many votes either go uncounted or fail to influence election outcomes. Specifically:
- Many voters are left unrepresented as their chosen candidates or parties do not win any seats.
- Wasted votes are a common issue, where some votes help elect candidates, while others have no impact at all.
- Minority-supported parties can win a disproportionate number of seats, skewing the true will of the electorate
The Solution: Proportional Representation
We believe that the only way to truly fix these issues and achieve fairer elections is through the introduction of Proportional Representation (PR) using the Single Transferable Vote (STV) method. This system ensures that:
- Voters’ preferences are more accurately reflected in the final election results.
- Minority parties are given a fairer share of representation.
- All votes have the opportunity to make a difference.
We are advocating for the implementation of Proportional Representation for all elections in South Australia—whether they be federal, state, or local elections. With PR, we can create an electoral system that works for everyone.
